Marion Koopmans


Professor Marion Koopmans is carrying out research into the effect of rapidly spreading zoonotic viral infections on the world population, with a particular emphasis on transmission through food.
She is the scientific coordinator of COMPARE, a major H2020 project (20 million euros) that is looking at possible applications of sequence technologies of the next generation of methods for detecting and tracking outbreaks (www.compare-europe.eu), and co-PI in the FP7-funded PREPARE research project (www.prepare-europe.eu), which is aimed at building a pan-European operational network for large-scale and rapid European clinical research in response to outbreaks of infectious diseases with the potential to become epidemics.
She is the director of the WHO Collaboration Centre for Emerging Diseases at Erasmus MC and the scientific director for Emerging Diseases at the Netherlands Centre for One Health (www.ncoh.nl). She has won the Infectious Disease Prize from the ‘Nederlandse Vereniging voor Infectieziekten’ (Netherlands Association for Infectious Diseases) and the Stevin Prize 2018. She has co-authored more than 500 publications.
