Photo and visualization contest: Framing Resilience

NWO Life2022 stands for exploration, pushing boundaries, discussing new or desirable developments in the field, inspiration through each other’s research & methods, and creating new interdisciplinary collaborations. To provoke the senses during NWO Life2022 in a different, slightly unexpected way, we challenge you to exhibit your scientific photographic work… and win your own artwork professionally printed as well as the audience award: a digital polaroid camera!

Images and visualizations ignite the imagination in ways other than conventional means of communication. They can capture scientific breakthroughs and function as an alternative way of distributing knowledge to the public. Some captivating scientific images will make it to publications, but many will never reach a broader audience. To showcase these works of art, NWO organises the NWO Life2022 Photo and Visualization Contest: Framing Resilience!

What are we looking for?

Did you, or can you, take the stunning picture that captures (part of) the essence of your scientific work? A particular unique image that is a piece of art in itself? That is what we are looking for! Think along the lines of photos of cells, tissues, organs, organisms, ecosystems, planets, but also analytic representations, measurements, illustrations, drawings … you are the artist, so you decide! Submissions should somehow have a link to NWO Life2022’s theme ‘Resilience’: how do you frame resilience? 

How does it work?

Step 1

Submit your entry by email (low resolution in jpeg or png is fine for now, if your photo/visualization is selected, we will ask you for a higher resolution image: jpeg, > 300 dpi) and include the following required information:

  1. Which of the 5 tracks of NWO Life2022 does your entry belong to?
  2. Who created the photo/visualization?
    Your name and affiliation.
  3. What do we see?
    A short description of what the photo/visualization represents. No more than 50 words.

Step 2

A small committee selects 2 winning entries per track. These 10 selected photos/visualizations will be professionally printed and showcased at NWO Life2022 as a mini-exhibition. NWO Life2022 participants will vote for a favourite of the 10 displayed artworks during the two conference days.

Prizes

  • The artwork with the most votes wins the audience award: a digital polaroid camera
  • The creators of all 10 selected artworks win their own photo/visualization, professionally printed
