Interconnected Lives: Symbiosis Across Biological Systems

Room 558

Chairs: Akos T. Kovacs (LEI), Daniel Rozen (LEI)

Symbiosis, the mutual relationships among distinct organisms, is a fundamental force shaping the diversity, function, and evolution of life. The proposed session will explore the diverse forms and functions of symbiotic interactions, from mutualism to commensalism across microscopic and macroscopic life. Cross-feeding and metabolic cooperation will be in focus as unifying principles that sustain complex ecological networks and enhance adaptation in both natural and engineered environments. Presentations will focus on evolution, ecology, molecular mechanisms, and systems-level approaches that uncover how symbioses influence development, and resilience in host microbiomes, and within microbial communities. Ultimately, this session will highlight that symbiosis is not only a biological phenomenon, but as a central organizing principle connecting organisms, environments, and evolutionary innovation.
