Visualization contest: Capturing the Art of Life

NWO Life2024 stands for exploration, pushing boundaries, discussing new or desirable developments in the field, inspiration through each other’s research & methods, and creating new interdisciplinary collaborations. To provoke the senses during NWO Life2024, we challenge you to participate in our visualization-contest! Submit your science-related visualizations (static or moving imagery), get exhibited at the conference and win exciting prizes!

Scientific imagery and visualizations appeal to the imagination in a unique way. Images and visualizations can capture the essence of scientific problems and breakthroughs. They can function as a remarkably effective way of distributing knowledge to the public. They can be simply… beautiful, memorable, inspiring, provocative or encouraging. Captivating scientific imagery and visualizations will make it to publications occasionally, but most often they never reach a broader audience. To showcase the works of art that scientists produce and to give them the stage they deserve, NWO organizes the NWO Life2024 Visualization Contest: Capturing the Art of Life.

What are we looking for?

What are we looking for? Any static or moving imagery that you – the scientist – call scientific art! Did you, or can you, take the stunning picture that captures the art of life? Did you deliberately or indeliberately create an image or visualization of a beautiful phenomenon or process that deserves to be called art? That is what we are looking for! Think along the lines of photos or visualizations of cells, tissues, organs, organisms, ecosystems, planets and beyond, but also analytic representations, data-visualizations, measurement set-ups, illustrations, drawings, sketches … you are the artist, so you decide!

Prizes

Deadline for submission is 1 May.

How does it work?

Step 1

Submit your entry by email. Low resolution in jpeg or png (for static imagery) or in gif, avi or mp4 (for moving imagery) is fine for now. Include the following required information in your original submission:

  1. Which of the 5 tracks of NWO Life2024 does your entry belong to?
  2. Who created the photo/imagery/visualization, and when?
    Your name and affiliation.
  3. What do we see?
A short description of what the photo/imagery/visualization (re)presents. No more than 50 words.

If your photo/imagery/visualization is selected for the exhibition (see below), we will ask you for a higher resolution file.

Submit your entry by email

Step 2

A small NWO committee selects 2 entries per track. These 10 selected photos/images/visualizations will be showcased at NWO Life2024, and are eligible to win one of 2 prizes: a jury prize and an audience prize. The audience prize is determined by you, the NWO Life2024 participants yourselves: you can vote for your favorite displayed artwork during the two conference days. The jury prize will be determined by a jury consisting of the a speaker of the conference (to be announced), together with a group of students from the Royal Academy of the Arts, The Hague, who will also be exhibiting at our conference themselves. The jury prize will be judged on the basis of the following four criteria: beauty, skill, uniqueness and aptness in reflecting the art of life. The jury prize will be accompanied by a short motivation, which will be read during the closing ceremony of the conference.
